Red Siskin

Red Siskin

The Red Siskin, Carduelis cucullata, is a small passerine bird. I was fortunate enough to see this absolute stunner of a bird in a conservation project within the Zurich Zoo premises.

Sadly, it is also a bird that is on the endangered species list. Massive illegal trapping for the cage bird trade seems to have been the biggest reason behind this wonderful little bird’s downfall. In fact, data seems to suggest that there are only between 600-6000 pairs left in the world.

We humans never learn, do we?
