Indian Paradise Flycatcher

Feluda and the Indian Paradise flycatcher

Prodosh Chandra Mitter aka Feluda is possibly the most famous private investigator ever known to Bengal and all Bengalis. A resident of 21 Rajani Sen Road, Ballygunge in Kolkata, Feluda is known to use his superb observational skills and sharp thinking to crack difficult cases. Duly assisted by his cousin Tapesh Ranjan Mitter aka Topshe.

Feels real no? Well, a fictional creation of the legendary Satyajit Ray, Feluda debuted in a Bengali magazine called Sandesh in 1965. He has starred in many short stories and in films like Sonar Kella and Joi Baba Felunath.

While many actors have played Feluda on the silver screen, for me, no one did it better than Soumitra Chatterjee.

If you have never watched a Feluda film, your education is sadly incomplete. Drop all the OTT stuff, go and watch Sonar Kella now. I am sure you will find it online.

Indian paradise flycatcher | Binomial name: Terpsiphone paradisiisi

Apparently, this stunning bird has been mentioned in two Feluda stories: Chinnamastar Abhishap & Jahangirer Swarnamudra.

Who would have thought I would find a connection between two such disparate things. Apart from the fact that both are favourites of mine.

Conservation Status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

Kingdom: Animalia | Class: Aves | Order: Passeriformes | Family: Monarchidae
